Excessive and abnormal sweating can occur to men and women of all ages and occupations. The social anxiety and reduced self-confidence that can occur as a result of profusely sweating despite being engaged in nothing strenuous is a difficult problem to live with. Thankfully, the smart use of Botox can help reduce or eliminate any excessive and abnormal sweating you might be experiencing. This condition is also known as hyperhidrosis.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

An estimated fifteen and a half million people in the United States and three hundred and sixty-five million people worldwide suffer from excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis.

The condition causes abnormal sweating that isn’t caused by or associated with increased physical exertion or activity, nor increases in the body’s temperature but is a reaction of the nervous system that prompts the sweat glands to work harder to produce sweat that your body doesn’t actually need in order to regulate its temperature.

Hyperhidrosis can become so pronounced that it interferes with your routine daily activities, and causes sweat to soak through clothes or run down the arms and off the palms of your hands. Naturally, this can be stressful and embarrassing and cause considerable social anxiety.

How is Hyperhidrosis Treated?

The same Botox used to treat dynamic facial lines and wrinkles can be used to treat excessive sweating. To treat hyperhidrosis, Botox is injected to block certain nerve signals that are responsible for sweating. Botox targets these nerves and prevents them from telling your sweat glands to produce sweat when you don’t in fact need that sweat in order for your body to cool down.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • Botox treatment for excessive in Boston sweating is done right here in our office.
  • The procedure typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes.
  • No recovery period or downtime will be required.
  • Depending on the treatment area, the procedure will be virtually pain-free (if the armpits are being treated), to mildly or moderately uncomfortable (if the hands and feet are being treated since they house more nerve endings).
  • Numbing cream can be applied as necessary to reduce pain and discomfort.

Areas Treatable with Botox to Prevent Excessive Sweating

The areas of the body most commonly treated with Botox for the purpose of reducing excessive sweating are:

  • Armpits
  • Hands
  • Feet

Am I a Candidate for Hyperhidrosis Treatment with Botox?

Almost all patients affected by hyperhidrosis will make good candidates for the procedure. Botox is not recommended for anyone who is allergic to Botox or any of its ingredients, nor is it advised for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Results

You will begin to experience the results of treatment within about five days. Your armpits, or the other areas you were treated, will begin to generate significantly less sweat. Your body will typically still produce a small amount of sweat that is far more natural and appropriate to the environment, but you will no longer experience excessive and abnormal sweating. These results will last from four to six months at which point a maintenance treatment can be done to prolong your results.
