What Happens During The African American Rhinoplasty Procedure?

Each ethnicity has general, underlying structural differences when it comes to the appearance of the nose. While these are generally similar, there are of course variations from patient to patient, which are fully taken into account in planning and performing ethnic rhinoplasty surgery. African American noses differ widely depending on ancestral heritage. Some African American noses have a high bridge and a downward-facing tip.

Others have low nasal bridges and wider, more flaring nostrils. Others have shorter nasal bones and wide nostrils. During your procedure, whatever changes you desire to refine your nasal shape are carefully and precisely made. Your procedure will begin with general anesthesia. From there, the surgical technique will vary based on your needs. Dr. Fechner will perform either open or closed rhinoplasty.

Closed Rhinoplasty

More finite changes to the nose are made with the closed rhinoplasty technique. Small incisions are made within the nostrils, and carefully precise changes are made that require less restructuring.

Open Rhinoplasty

If your alterations are more complex, open rhinoplasty will be performed, starting with small incisions on the outside of the nose that are hidden within the natural folds of your skin. The nasal skin can then be lifted to expose the underlying nasal structures, allowing more accurate, significant reshaping.

Recovery After African American Rhinoplasty

An external splint and tape will be placed over your nose to help it heal properly after your surgery. This will remain in place for one week. During your recovery period, you will experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Keep your head elevated and apply cold compresses around your nose and eyes. It will take about two weeks before the bruising and swelling fades enough for most patients to return to sedentary work. Remaining swelling in the nose slowly decreases over a period of months. There will be changes in the appearance of the nose as the amount of swelling alters and fades. This is very normal with rhinoplasty procedures. Final results appear once the nose has healed completely.
