Upper Lip Lift for a Youthful Smile

The passage of time can impact the appearance of your lips and mouth. One change is when the skin above the upper lip lengthens, elongating the area between the nose and the red lips. Dr. Fechner performs upper lip lift surgery in Boston and Worcester to remove excess skin and restore a more attractive mouth with a youthful smile.

What Is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a plastic surgery procedure to elevate the position of the upper lip. It is performed to shorten the upper lift, correct a downward-sloping mouth, and create a more youthful and relaxed smile. For optimal aesthetic results, Dr. Fechner may perform either or both of two types of lip lift procedures:

Upper lip lift

This procedure shortens the distance of the skin between the base of the nose and the upper lip. It exposes the teeth more, increases the amount of pink lips showing, and creates fuller, more youthful-looking lips.

Corner lip lift

This surgical technique may be performed alone or in combination with the upper lip lift. It is designed to correct downturned lip corners and involves only the edges of the mouth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift Procedure?

Patients of all ages can benefit from lip lift surgery performed by one of the best facial plastic surgeons in Boston. Dr. Fechner has performed hundreds of lip lifts for men and women. An excessively long upper lip develops with aging in some people, while others are born with this cosmetic flaw. You may be a good candidate for a lip lift if:

  • Your lips are not as full as you would like them to be.
  • You have a long space between your upper lip and the base of the nose.
  • Your teeth do not show enough when you open your mouth.
  • Lip fillers give you “duck lips” as the upper lip lacks room to expand vertically.

How Is Lip Lift Surgery Performed?

Dr. Fechner performs lip lift procedures in Worcester on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia with or without sedation. After the treatment area is numbed, he makes a small incision directly under the nose into the natural groove and removes a small strip of tissue and skin. As he places tiny sutures, this elevates the position of the lip and increases volume in the pink portion of the upper lip. In a corner lip lift procedure, Dr. Fechner uses a wedge excision technique in which the edges of the mouth corners are slightly lifted with tiny sutures. This procedure is also known as “smile surgery.”

What Are the Benefits of a Lip Lift?

An older looking mouth can add years to the appearance of the entire face. A lip lift procedure can shorten the upper lip for a poutier, more youthful appearance, elevate the mouth corners, and reduce the amount of skin in the nasolabial (nose and upper lip) area. Frank Fechner, M.D. is a plastic surgeon in Boston and Worcester who is board-certified in both facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and head and neck surgery (otolaryngology). He has extensive training and experience and focuses his practice on cosmetic plastic surgery procedures of the face. Dr. Fechner performs lip lift surgery with artistry and skill to produce stunning, natural-looking results with minimal scarring.
