Deep Plane Neck Lift

Many people notice that their neck changes and signs of aging more rapidly than their face does. Changes to the neck that come with age include fullness, sagging skin, jowls, or a lack of definition in the jawline. A deep plane neck lift refines the contours of a youthful, firm, and sculpted neckline. The result of this procedure is a dramatic, refreshed improvement that takes years off the appearance.

What is a Deep Plane Neck Lift?

A deep plane neck lift is a surgical procedure that addresses the underlying tissues of the neck, called the SMAS. The SMAS, the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System, is a layer of connective tissues beneath the skin. This fibrous network of tissues lies under the skin but above the facial muscles, and it forms the framework of the face and neck. Tightening the SMAS achieves significant, long-lasting results. A deep neck lift focuses on lifting and sculpting the neck contours to achieve a more youthful, refined, and attractive jawline and neck.

Why a Deep Plane Neck Lift Instead of Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction breaks up fat in the neck and suctions it out to address stubborn pockets of fat on the jawline and neck. While this is an effective, long-lasting treatment, if your neck skin is lax, it will not address sagging skin and can even make it look worse. Your neck muscles and other underlying tissues will not be addressed.

On the other hand, a deep plane neck lift tightens the muscles and connective tissues and sculpts the contours of the neck. This procedure can be combined with liposuction to achieve an even more dramatic effect. During this procedure, the entire area is lifted to achieve a tight, firm aesthetic.

What Happens During the Deep Plane Neck Lift Procedure?

Dr. Fechner will have a personalized consultation with you ahead of time to ensure he understands your aesthetic goals. He will review your medical history, examine your skin and neck, and determine if you’re a candidate for this procedure. He will explain the details of your surgery to help you feel empowered and confident about what to expect.

A deep plane neck lift is performed under general anesthesia. A thin, one-inch incision is made beneath the chin, hidden in the natural contours there. Dr. Fechner will use this incision to tighten and lift the connective tissues and muscles in the neck to sculpt an elegant, defined contour. He will remove fat on the neck and under the chin. Your surgery will take about one hour.

What is Recovery Like After a Deep Plane Neck Lift?

You will need one to two weeks of downtime after a deep plane neck lift. You will need this time to rest as your body heals and recovers. You will experience bruising and swelling, which will worsen during your downtime and then begin to go down after about two weeks. You will need to sleep with your head elevated to help reduce swelling. Do not lift anything over five pounds or exert yourself in any way as you’re healing. Do not turn or twist your neck. Most patients can return to light, sedentary work within 7-14 days. It will take about a month before you are able to exercise lightly again. Expect to experience a sensation of tightness and numbness that will last for about two months. You will not be able to exercise strenuously during this time.

Results After a Deep Plane Neck Lift

It will take about two months to see your results, and residual swelling may continue for longer. Your scar will be well hidden in the lines under your chin. It will fade to become a thin white line. Once your results appear, you will be able to enjoy them for 10-15 years. Your neck will continue to age after your recovery, but you will have set the clock back years, giving you much longer to enjoy your firm, youthful-looking contours.

What is the Risk of Complications?

Like any surgery, a deep plane neck lift surgery carries risks, such as infection, bleeding, or scarring. The risk of complications is directly related to the experience and expertise of your surgeon.
